Friends with Quilts

This is my latest quilt. Does anyone have a name for it? Autumn thought I should call it "Under the Sea". Yes it is a little modern for me.

Wedding Bells, Brighton, and the Sewing Retreat

This past week was filled with wedding preparations for Benjamin and Melissa's wedding.

Monday evening after supper the young-uns played a board game, called Ticket to Ride.

Melissa making wedding plans with her Mom.

Ben and Melissa's wedding is in two weeks. The church had a bridal shower for Melissa and Bridget.

We always enjoy the food at a shower.

Thursday I was in Centreville, Va. where I taught "Star Tricks". Linda had a great start on her quilt.

Kathy was well on her way as well.

In the evening I had a lecture call "Designing Inside a Lone Star" In this lecture I also talked about some quilting techniques, as well as some quilts in my book "Simply Triangles".

Terri took the "Cactus Star" class at a quilt show over a year ago and brought back her finished quilt for me to see. She did a terrific job.

My week in Red Lake, Canada

Dave and Parla have been having so much fun with Brighton. It has been such a blessing being here and seeing this little family flourish.

Tuesday Parla and I went out to buy fabric for a baby quilt. We both designed the quilt. Here are the fabrics we picked together.

3 1/2 " squares of all the fabrics.

Fabric pieced letters for the name.

Name, blocks and borders added then positioning and pinning the applique into position.

Parla, Brighton, and I went on an afternoon drive. Leaving land and entering the ice road. A new experience for me.

We stopped by the house Dave and Parla bought to see how Dave was getting along.

This week Dave knocked out the wall between the living room and kitchen and added a new back door. He also rebuilt the stairway and began framing up 2 closets.

I enjoyed the newly installed fireplace...an addition which was definitely needed for this northern country.

I leave tonight to fly home. What a wonderful time I have had with Dave, Parla and Brighton! Can't wait to see them in two weeks over Benjamin's and Melissa's wedding.

Proud Grandma

Thursday we got the long awaited call from Parla and Dave saying little Brighton Noel was born. I am a grandma now! Sunday I flew up here to Canada to see this precious little one.

One day this past week I hosted a brunch for the senior ladies from our church along with some young gals to bring them.

Rebecca pulled out her quilt again and worked on it a few days over Christmas break.

Today we go to the hospital to get baby pricked for some testing; then we are going to a fabric store to pick out fabrics for a baby quilt. Parla and I designed the quilt yesterday and we will make it while I am here.

Every year before Christmas us four ladies go shopping. I got home and crawled into bed at 3:38am. We end our day with eating out and setting around a table for about 2 hours. It is a blast and a day I always look forward to.

Hunting and Sewing Trip

Terry and I headed to Ohio where we meet my sister Polly and her husband Mark. While driving down the road, the men talked and Polly and I quilted and watched some quilting videos.

We spent the first evening and night at Mark's cousin's home (Lois and Steve Ulrichs). Steve showed us many quilts that his mother had made.

Then on to Iowa!

The four guys in the center are the hunters. Terry and Mark went along to watch deer, but not to hunt.

After settling in to our hunting cabin and making some soup, Polly and I got right to work on our sewing projects.

I machine quilted the whole time I was there.

Over the weekend Polly's grandchildren came with there Mommas.

There were 11 children. They were well behaved children who listen to there parents. It was truly a blessing to have these families there with us.

Terry went out 2 1/2 days and video taped the deer. On the day he went with Jeremy. That was the day he (Jeremy) got his big buck.

This is one happy guy.

We packed up and came home. Terry and I went to Cabela's and some antique stores on the way home. A wonderful time with my hubby.

VQM Quilt Museum Fundraiser

What fun I had on Saturday. I was privileged to do a fundraiser for the Virginia Quilt Museum.

Folks could meander through the house visiting all rooms where quilts were on display.

Explosion of Sunflowers was displayed on the front of the wood shed.

My back door is always my front door where my family and friends are always welcome.

I didn't show you all the quilts but maybe I can do another open house some day.

Memories
This picture brings back good childhood memories. Picture taken outside the door where I grew up. My brother Oren Jr and I played in these woods and climb to the "Big Rock" many times

Another memory is swimming in the river. The tree on the left I would crawl up so no one would throw me in the river. Other memories were jumping and diving out of trees, playing on inter-tubes, skipping rocks, catching cray fish and seeing how far I could swim under water.

Last weekend my good friend and co-worker, Linda invited me to join her at the Extra Ordinary Women's Conference in Lynchburg.

We had a lot of fun and were inspired by well known Christian artists. In the end we got to see and hear Sarah Palin.

Here are a few of the Quilters Guild of the Bluegrass ladies in Lexington Ky. who took my class Chinese Checkers this summer. It is always a delight to see finished quilts.

Carla is working on "Star Spin" quilt at Patchwork Plus.

Autumn has done a lot of the mowing this summer. I am amazed at how fast the yard can be mowed with the zero turn.

Next weekend I will be doing an open house in my home for the Virginia Quilt Museum.

of quilts. There will be quilts that have been featured at the

Challenge as well as quilts from my book “Star Struck

So glad to have Parla home for a few days. Rebecca and her friend Abe. Saturday morning all my chillins were home for a brunch along with some other special folks.

Benjamin and Melissa changed their wedding date to January 28. They are excited about moving the date up 84 days.

Kathy just finished hand quilting "Amish Grace" for me. I have always wanted to piece a quilt using all solids. In piecing I used my diamond chain which runs between the sampler blocks and around the border.

This week Melissa (Benjamin's fiance) came from Iowa and moved in with our family. Benjamin moved in with Granddaddys who live next door. Their wedding date is April 21.

This past week I painted the back porch and hung a new quilt up. Such a good feeling.

So glad these two cousins joined us in Canada. They really made our trip exciting.

This weekend was our church camp out at Highland. Katrina Rhodes loves any animal that exists.

This past weekend Terry and I took a load of Old Order Mennonites to PA to a Auction. On Sunday we joined our friends and went to their church. Terry got to ride a buggy to church. Wish I had a picture.

TRIP TO CANADA

The last 10 days were spent in Canada to see my daughter Parla and Dave. We left Virigina with Gabriel Barnhart, Rebecca (daughter) , Autumn (daughter) and myself.

When we arrived in Red Lake we had a supper invitation waiting for us. It was to Matt and Dianna's who live on a small island.

We meet Matt in his motor boat at a dock and he picked us up and took us across the lake.

They own the island and are the only ones who live on it. No running water, but they do have electricity because they have solar panels. It was so quaint. We had a wonderful supper and a very special evening and a wonderful time together .

We went to a baby shower for Parla one afternoon.

We are getting ready for a three day canoe trip.

Dustin Graber (the girls first cousin) who is in Dryden Canada joined us for the trip. Gabriel (the other cousin) also went.

One day there was a breeze and we took advantage of it by putting up sails. It was quite welcome after rowing for 1 1/2 days.

Time to eat. Parla planned all the meals and did a fantastic job.

SKY DIVING AND BIBLE SCHOOL

Autumn got to go skydiving.

Oh my the ground is coming up.

She said it was a blast and enjoyed every second of the trip to earth.

After I returned from the Knoxville Quilt show I had garden work to do.

The following day was teaching Labyrinth quilt class at Patchwork Plus.

At the end of the week I flew to Nevada with my sister Sheila and her son Caleb.

Sheila's daughter Sheri lives in Nevada.

Nathan also went on this trip. We went to teach Vacation Bible school in Eureka Nevada.

One afternoon Sheri took me on a four wheeler ride, and this is what we saw.

I was the crafts teacher. This morning the verse was "I will make you fishers of men", we made fish out of Styrofoam balls, we wrapped them with yarn and glued eyes, fines and tails on them.

Sheila taught all the classes their Bible memory.

We stayed with Roland and Leanna Good. They were wonderful hosts and such a blessing to be around.

Sheri lead the music. Each class had a different color of t-shirt on. This was very helpful .

Now I am home and I have more canning and work to do before Rebecca, Autumn and I take off to Canada to see Dave and Parla.

LEXINGTON, KY

This past week started by heading to Lexington Ky to teach the Quilters’ Guild of the Bluegrass. Carol was a wonderful host who opened her home to Mother, June, Polly and I.

The class I taught was "Chinese Checkers"

These ladies were a blast.

I think I was making them work pretty hard.

In the next room my sister Polly was teaching my pattern "Spinning Pinwheels".

Polly was a wonderful teacher.

In the evening Polly and I gave a power point presentation. Polly's power point was called "Leaving a Legacy" and mine was called, "The How, When and Where of Quilting".

From Lexington we headed to the Knoxville AQS quilt show. This is my sister Julia who is holding a mug with her quilt "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel". AQS picked her quilt from this years book, "New Quilts from Old Favorites, Orange Peel". She felt very honored to have this quilt printed on this years mug.

Come to Knoxville for the AQS show July 13-16. There is room in my classes and lectures for you to join me in learning new techniques and meeting new friends. Here are the class:
Lecture/Brunch Sat. July 16, "Three Mennonite Sisters Quilting Journey" Three of the seven Heatwole sisters share how quilting has been and continues to be a special part of their lives. This power point presentation of stunning quilts reflects their Mennonite heritage, and show many quilts and designs they have made. See a trunk show of their work. Hear their story and see the contemporary and traditional quilts.

Class: "Pinwheel Spin". We will learn how to create triangle blocks with polygons. If you have never learned to sew a “Y” seam. Now is the chance to learn. We will sew the triangle blocks into rows and the rows into a wall quilt. In the end you will have interlocking pinwheels. This will challenge you in the world of quilting.

Class: "Shenandoah Star"The goal of this class will be for each student to create a beautiful strip pieced star. It is quick easy and fun. No inset seams. The techniques learned in this class are strip piecing, cutting triangles and diamonds and creating a zippy pinwheel in the center of the star.

Polly made a complete quilt from the "Shenandoah Star" pattern.

Class: "Star Tricks II" Bring your colored pencils and a creative mind. Starting with a lone star layout we will create design within the diamond blocks. Learn key points in creating your own diamond blocks that are placed in a lone star layout. We will discuss why designs will or will not work. And how to give them some zip.

WHAT I LOVE TO DO

My day started with helping Terry take care of baby turkeys, garden work and a little house work. Then came piecing. Look at the two triangles. The one on the right has a nylon netting over the right side.
Why the netting?

The netting adds a darker shading, which makes the stars look 3-dimmentional.

This class is part II of the "Desert Rose" pattern. The class sample is in the background.

Coffee

One of my highlights of the week is drinking coffee with mother.

they have made Moroccan couscous and seven vegetable chicken tagine, and Indian chicken saag and curried cauliflower.

Around 8:45 the evening primroses started to open.

Then the sphinx moths flew in. These moths look like humming birds, they are just a little smaller and they have a 3 inch needle on them to suck the nectar from the flowers. Fascinating to watch.

When I was dropping off my van to be worked on, I ran into Edith Shank, who was waiting for her car to get inspected. I invited her to join me for coffee at mothers. It was fun listening to them reminisce.

By the time our coffee party ended, we were joined by Linda Tice, Holly, and Sheri.

Fathers Funeral

All of our children were home this weekend for my fathers funeral.

When Autumn arrived Saturday morning at 10:00am we had a brunch waiting. Granddaddy and Grammy joined us. Dave, we missed having you with us.

All but 4 of the 42 grandchildren were at the funeral.

Scrap Squad Spinout

Bitter Sweet Days

This week we are with our family in Virginia. Father's health is rapidly declining and together we are caring for him. These are bittersweet days.

When we ask father if he is in pain he usually shakes his head slowly and softly says no. He sleeps a lot and this is a comfort.

We are having sweet times as we share past memories and there is more laughter in these walls than tears.

Last night we were treated to lattes by Rebecca.

Emily is excited about practicing her machine quilting on this quilt top that Barbara pieced.

I love the twinkle in the grandchildren's eyes.

We have been encouraged a lot by the way Father has responded to and handled these difficult times. All of us are drawn to him with tenderness as he tries hard to respond well to the pain and misery. This is a time when we are sharing precious times right along side the diffcult ones. Though we love our Father, we are asking God to take him home. We appreciate your prayers for us.
